Playing with a controller

Move, fight, cast and work every window with a gamepad. Prompts follow whatever you used last: the controller, or the keyboard and mouse.

This page is about playing on a PC. Show the PC edition

Connect a gamepad and press any button: the prompts and the training grounds switch to the controller, and touching the keyboard or mouse switches them back. With several controllers connected, the one you used last plays.

Moving and fighting

ButtonWhat it does
Left stickMove. A little way walks; all the way runs.
Right stickLook. While you hold an attack or a parry, a small push picks the side of the blow and a full push turns the view.
RT / LTAttack (hold for a heavy blow, tap for a light one) / block.
A / BJump / dodge the way the left stick leans.
X / YUse (talk, loot, doors, mount) / target what is under the crosshair.
D-pad left / rightDraw weapon set A or B.
D-pad up / downSwitch camera / crouch.
Left stick clickKick, or step into your other footing with a spear or halberd.
Right stick clickTarget yourself.
Back / StartInventory / game menu.

Powers and items

Five shortcuts sit in a bar along the bottom of the screen; they are the same slots as the phone's power ring. Hold LB and press A, B, X, Y or D-pad up to pick one, then let go of that button to use it. Let go of LB first to cancel. Click the right stick as you let go to use it on yourself.

Hold LB and press RB or D-pad left or right to turn the bar's page (there are four), or D-pad down to open the Powers window and fill the slots.

Holding RB

Hold RB and push the right stick up or down to zoom. While each applies, RB + A takes off, RB + B lands, RB + Y puts a selected horse, siege engine or ship back into its figurine, kit or deed, and RB + X locks or unlocks the door under your crosshair. A line above the bar lists what is on offer.

Windows and typing

In windows the left stick moves the pointer, A clicks and drags, X right-clicks, the right stick or D-pad scrolls and B closes the window. Picking an item opens a sheet of what you can do with it. In the top-down view, while you place a building, A places it, LB turns it, RB changes its look and B cancels.

A text box opens an on-screen keyboard: the D-pad or left stick picks a key, A types it, X deletes, Y changes case, LB switches to symbols, Start enters and B closes it. Your keyboard still works too.

Settings and bindings

The Controller section of Options sets the camera and pointer speeds, the dead zone of each stick and whether looking up and down is inverted. Changes apply at once.

Any button can be changed in Controls except LB and RB, which hold the power and RB layers (they can only open the game menu). While Controls waits for a button, press Back and Start together, or Esc, to cancel; to bind Back or Start alone, press and release it.
