Food, rations, ale and mood
What you feed your citizens, how much, and how varied it is decides their mood, and mood decides everything.
The Inner Council sets the city's rations on the City tab. Citizens eat from the granaries at that rate:
| Rations | Mood |
|---|---|
| None | −40 |
| Half | −15 |
| Normal | 0 |
| Extra | +15 |
| Double | +30 |
If the granaries cannot serve even half rations, the city is starving.
What else lifts mood
- Variety: every different food in steady supply adds mood (up to +38). One apple is not variety; a good counts once you hold about half an hour of it.
- Ale: Inns pour ale for 40 citizens per rank, worth up to +25. Ale comes from a Hops Farm and a Brewery.
- Inns and churches: +8 each, up to +24.
- Comfortable homes: villas and estates. See Housing and population.
What mood does
| Mood | Effect |
|---|---|
| High | Every workshop and builder crew works faster (up to 1.25×), the city grows, and tax rises (up to 1.5×). |
| 0 or above | The city grows while it is fed. |
| Low | Work slows (down to 0.6×) and tax falls (down to 0.5×). |
| −25 or below | Unrest: citizens leave. |
